Visiting guest: Mia Garlick, General Counsel of Creative Commons

Earlier this week Creative Commons Australia, in conjunction with the OAK Law project and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation, played host to Mia Garlick, General Counsel of Creative Commons in San Francisco. While she was here, Mia met with a number of representatives of Australian universities, government and industry. This included participating in a full day seminar-workshop on the Creative Commons project with QUT researchers and representatives of the Queensland Government. Mia’s visit provided a valuable opportunity for the CC-AU team to learn more about recent developments in Creative Commons and discuss potential projects for its further implementation in Australia.

21st Century Creativity in a Copyright World: How Can the Potential be Realised?

The event hosted by QUT Law School and the Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation was a great success. Organised by Professor Mark Perry (UWO, on sabattical at QUT), and Nic Suzor (QUT), the event saw Mia Garlick from Creative Commons joining Professor Brian Fitzgerald from Creative Commons Australia and Richard Neville, Toby Miller, and Dean Whitbread to discuss the direction of intellectual property in the 21st century. Other QUT researchers present included Axel Bruns, Dilan Thampapillai, Anne Matthew.

Everyone met in Second Life, a fantastic Virtual World created by Linden Labs.
